images
We need to choose our images carefully, opting for positive portrayals of Disabled People rather than trying to evoke pity or charity.
using positive images
The images we use are positive and challenging. The media tends to portray Disabled People as objects of pity or tragic heroes.
The Young People's Inclusion Network recognises that Disabled People are individuals not props, and we will ensure that our images give Disabled Young People the dignity and respect they deserve as individuals.
Our photos will therefore not draw particular attention to impairments. They will not show groups of adults crouching down to pat a young person on the head. The stories the images tell will not evoke pity.
The images we use will show young people enjoying themselves and getting involved. Action shots showing movement are best, depicting young people mid-activity. When we are looking to provide challenge, we will do so in a positive manner - demanding a right rather than asking a favour.
We will work with young people to take photos which reflect the way they see themselves and each other.
Here are some examples.
